Veterans Monument

Veterans MonumentThe dreams of many veterans came true on Sunday May 26, 1996 when the East Brunswick Veterans Monument was formally dedicated at the annual Memorial Day Observance. Since that time, the monument has been well received in our community, attracting hundreds of visitors. It is not unusual to see a veteran sitting in silent solitude, or township employees enjoying a quiet lunch, or families on a field trip with young children at the site. Constructed of varying shades of black granite, the site features a waving black granite flag with sandblasted stars and stripes, a sloped entry monument inscribed with the words: "In recognition of all men and women who served their country with honor in the military forces," and six side monuments representing the branches of service. Beautiful seasonally landscaped gardens surround the site creating an appealing and welcoming attraction.

Hailed as a unique piece of public art, the East Brunswick Veterans Monument received the Robert B. Kinsey Award from the New Jersey Recreation and Park Association at their annual conference in March 1997. This prestigious award recognizes "excellence in design of completed recreation and park facilities." Receipt of this award is a tribute to the fine work of local artist and sculptor Blaise Batko who designed the monument and Steve Gottlieb, the township's landscape architect, who designed the surrounding landscape.

Designed as a park within a park, the monument has become one of the township's most visited locations. This public appeal encouraged the township's administration to name the area "Veterans Park." The dedication ceremony took place on May 25th, 1997, bringing the number of developed parks in our community to fourteen.
